The Immanuel German School

travels to Germany (again…)

   July 10 - 20, 2004

 Trip Highlights

Day 1, Saturday, July 10th:

Depart Philadelphia for our  flight to Munich.

Day 2, Sunday July 11th:

Arrive Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss Airport and board our motorcoach for the drive to Oberstdorf**, a quaint town literally at the foot of the Alps.  This well-known mountain and skiing village lies in the southernmost corner of Germany and is surrounded by high mountains.  Wine reception and dinner at the Hotel Mohren Sunday evening.

Day 3, Monday, July 12th:

Travel to the Zugspitze***.  With a summit at 9,724 ft above sea level, the Zugspitze is the highest peak in Germany.  It can be reached by cable car from Zugspitzplatt station, the terminus of the rack-railway rising from Garmisch.  We’ll spend the afternoon in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Day 4, Tuesday, July 13th:

Free day to do as you please; explore Oberstdorf, shop, hike, visit the Nebelhorn, or just relax!

Day 5, Wednesday, July 14th:

Our motorcoach will whisk us off to Lindau** on Lake Constance** (Bodensee), Germany’s largest lake, which also borders Austria and Switzerland. Meersburg* is an attractive town perched above the lake shore offering  delightful views of the lake. Travel by ferry to the Mainau Island** (Insel Mainau) which is a paradise for all plant enthusiasts.  The juxtaposition  of the palace, charming Baroque church and colorful flower beds set in green parkland contribute to the magic of the island. Back in Oberstdorf, weather permitting,  we will gather at a local Biergarten, for a casual dinner.

Day 6, Thursday, July 15th:

After breakfast, we pack up and travel by bus to Füssen* and a tour of Neuschwanstein castle***.  With its countless towers, it is a fairytale castle and product of the imagination of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.  It inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom.  In the late afternoon, we arrive at the Hotel Tölzer Hof in Bad Tölz for a wine reception and dinner.

Day 7, Friday, July 16th:

A guided tour of Munich***, the Bavarian capital, one of the largest, most important cities in Germany, not far from the Alps, awaits us today.  We will visit the Marienplatz*, the square in the heart of Munich, and listen to the famous carillon (Glockenspiel) in the Neues Rathaus.  Also on the tour are the Frauenkirche*, Nymphenburg Palace**, and the Olympiapark, where the 1972 Olympic Games took place.  The afternoon will be open for shopping, eating or visiting museums, like the Alte Pinakothek***, which houses the masterpieces of European painters from the 14C to the 18C, or the Deutsches Museum***, one of the most important in the world for scientific and technical matters. We’ll enjoy the food, beer and atmosphere of the Hofbräuhaus this evening.

Day 8, Saturday, July 17th:

Sightseeing in Innsbruck, Austria. A visit to the Swarovski crystal factory and museum is planned.

Day 9, Sunday, July 18th:

Trip to the scenic Dolomite Mountains in South Tyrol, Italy.  Enjoy the charm of this northern Italian region.

Day 10, Monday July 19th:

Travel to the Chiemsee*, known as the “Bavarian Sea” and take a boat ride to the Herreninsel.  This island is famous for its castle, Herrenchiemsee**, where King Ludwig the II of Bavaria built his replica of Versailles.  The resemblance between the original of Louis XIV of  France, “the Sun King”, and Ludwig’s copy is striking.  We will dine together in the Hotel Tölzer Hof.

Day 11, Tuesday July 20th:

Depart from Munich’s airport for Philadelphia.
